John Metz |
John: I was born in Russellville, Arkansas at Saint Mary’s Hospital on January 27, 1961.
La Libertad: Where do you currently reside?
John: I live in Fort Kent, Maine
La Libertad: What is your occupation?
John: I am an Adjunct Faculty Instructor at the University of Maine, at Fort Kent. I also am a certified secondary teacher for our local school district. I instruct the College Access Program, coordinate the Work Ready Credential Program, and teach Digital Photography, Digital Imaging, and several Adult Basic Education courses (History, Government, Computer Literacy, et cetera).
La Libertad: What do you love most about your work?
John: Helping others achieve their goals and find their way to success and a better life! I like those light bulb moments and helping challenge others to find the answers they seek.
La Libertad: What talents and hobbies do you have?
John: Where to begin . . . I have always loved and enjoyed photography, having gotten my first camera in Third Grade many years ago. I enjoy capturing the moments as they are, as I see them. I typically do not edit my images. I enjoy organizing events like large photo sessions, car shows, and fund raisers. I also have always enjoyed marksmanship, shooting competitions, gunsmithing, leather carving, drawing, painting, wood working, metal working, welding, and customizing automobiles. I have even painted and pinstriped cars, motorcycles, and trucks before.
La Libertad: What inspires you?
John: A few special people inspire me. Some things catch my eye. I then, often, just follow my instincts and pursue them as my passion allows me to learn and explore them. I really enjoy life, the natural beauty that surrounds me, and seeing the creative work of others.
La Libertad: What is the hardest part of your job(s)?
Watching some students flounder and force themselves to fail to achieve their goals so they can take the easy way out.
La Libertad: What foreign languages, if any, do you read, write, and/or speak?
John: None, really.

La Libertad: What are your career goals?
John: I would like to continue to teach to adult learners and further my photography skills and business.
La Libertad: What projects are you working on?
John: I have an ongoing long term project running the U.M.F.K. and St. John Valley Community Photography Club (five years old now, with eighty-one members). Our club just created a year round, digital art exhibit by donating and placing a thirty-two-inch, flat screen in the U.M.F.K. Blake library to display our work on the campus. I am also doing a unique photo essay series on three separate topics (High Heels, Tattoos, and Eyes and Smiles).
La Libertad: What upcoming events, if any, do you intend to participate in?
John: I am preparing to exhibit new work in a local faculty art show here in our U.M.F.K. community gallery in March, 2015. I am also preparing host another community photo shoot session where I invite people to come and pose for fun. The last one took place in November, and fourteen people attended. This time the session will be in April of 2015. I am thinking the theme will be "Spring and Mystical." I am also preparing for my Sixth Annual U.M.F.K. Car Show, that I coordinate.
