Erica Anthony is a Bi-lingual Singer/Songwriter based in San Antonio, Texas.
La Libertad: When did you first start singing and playing instruments?
La Libertad: When did you first start singing and playing instruments?
Erica Anthony: I think I can officially say I began
teaching myself how to sing when I realized that I could make sounds
with my voice as a baby. Ok, that's silly, but my mom had given me a
toy guitar from Mexico when I was about two and my dad showed my how
to whistle when I was about three. I never sat down and decided to
master one instrument specifically, but over time, I dabbled in
several, leaving some behind and picking up others later. As far as
making a career out of music, that decision wasn't apparent until I
was around 16 or 17.
La Libertad: What instruments do you play?
La Libertad: What instruments do you play?
Erica Anthony: I mainly “play out” on voice,
upright bass, and acoustic guitar. I have, in the past, performed on
violin, electric bass, goumbe, berimbau, and pandeiro.
La Libertad: When did you first start writing?
La Libertad: When did you first start writing?
Erica Anthony: I remember first learning to
construct songs on keyboard in the early 90's, so I must have been
around eight or nine, which would also be before the time I started
playing violin.
La Libertad: What inspires you to write?
La Libertad: What inspires you to write?
Erica Anthony: Anything I've written about comes
form a personal experience, whether it's something that has happened
to be directly or a perspective that I've gained by being empathetic
to the human existence. I make efforts to write vaguely enough to
where many can relate to any song but cryptic enough to where songs
inspire thoughtfulness.
La Libertad: What is your musical style?
La Libertad: What is your musical style?
Erica Anthony: I like to lump my music into the
“singer/songwriter”category because of the set up I use as a
soloist, even thought my actual musical styles range from older eras
of jazz to Brazilian music and rock, funk, folk, and even ska. People
have come up and told me “I can't put my finger on it” with a
hint of surprise in their voice, especially if they aren't familiar
with the indie scene. I like to mix it up mostly because I like to
experiment with various genres and lyrical interpretations.
La Libertad: Do you speak any other languages?
La Libertad: Do you speak any other languages?
Erica Anthony: I'm slowly learning how to converse
in both Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish. I can read and write both
with some skill at the moment.
La Libertad: Where have you traveled?
Erica Anthony: For music, I haven't been very far,
mostly just rooted in San Antonio with a few trips to San Marcos and
Austin.
La Libertad: Do you have any current projects?
La Libertad: Do you have any current projects?
Erica Anthony: I have a few songs on the back
burner that I will be working on. I know I'm not the only artist who
does, but I still get this guilty feeling when I realize I have a
show coming up and I STILL haven't gotten to older ideas because
newer ideas pop up out of no where.
La Libertad: Any upcoming projects?
La Libertad: Any upcoming projects?
Erica Anthony: I am planning to enter some on-line
music contests fairly soon. I think I prefer these to live auditions
and competition because you get the chance to review your work before
the final submission.
La Libertad: What are your goals for your career?
La Libertad: What are your goals for your career?
Erica Anthony: I've shifted my plans over the
years, but I'm returning to the goal of being a sought after studio
musician with the addition of plans to delve into film scoring and
festival and special event performance. I do also hope to work with
other artists across disciplines and in my own in order to further my
skills as a musician.
