Interview With Shug Jackson

Shug introduced himself to us as "Shug Jackson...born and raised in Tucson, Arizona." He tells us that he "got [his]  start in music" when DJ Quik's manager, Greedy Greg, saw him on stage, and asked him for a demo tape. Apparently, Mr. Jackson gave Greedy a demo tape, which he gave to Russell Simmons, at Def Jam Records, and, Mr. Jackson tells us, "that's when it started."

La Libertad:  What inspires you?

Shug:  What inspires me? Life inspires me. Hearing other people's stories, and learning how much we're all alike, in ways, but yet so different at the same time. My children inspire me, as well, to just be better as a man every day. The inspiration for my new single, titled "Just In Case," was inspired by being a fan of Jaheim, an R&B [Rhythm and Blues] singer who's been one of my favorites for years. The song talks about a man going out into the world every day, and not knowing if he's going to make it back home, so he wants to cherish one last moment with his woman.

La Libertad:  Which other singers (if any) have influenced your style?

Shug:  Old-school rappers that influenced me are Rakim, LL Cool J, Ice Cube, and I can list many more. Those guys told stories, and the delivery was excellent, and really penetrated the skin.

La Libertad:  Should people follow you on social media such as Spotify, SoundCloud, etc., and, if so, why?

Shug:  People should follow me on Spotify because they're going to get music with substance, storytelling and a snapshot of what really goes on in life. They're also going to get fun and cleverness from the music.

La Libertad:  What is the hardest part about being a musician now-a-days?

Shug:  The hardest part of being a musician to me, is finding that little thing that's going to set you apart from the rest. The game is so crowded and saturated today, with music that sounds the same, so what's going set me apart from that?

La Libertad:  What are your overall career goals?

Shug:  My overall goal is to continue putting out great music with substance, [and] get better as an actor, and everything else will take care of itself.

La Libertad:  What links would you like to share?

La Libertad:  What else, if anything, would you like to tell our readers?

Shug:  I want to tell all the readers, "Music is great for the soul, and if it's not touching your soul, then it's probably not good music. If you're an artist yourself, stay true to you; remember that there's only one you, and you have everything it takes to be great!" One Love, Shug Jackson!
